January Volunteering Hours: 0
This month consisted of overall attempting to get used to the schedule again. We began the semester with a light module which was the reproductive module. I was having a hard time in the beginning to balance studying for the MCAT and making sure I am not falling behind in classes. I do enjoy the heavier presentation workload aspect of the semester. I feel as if I can improve on that so it's beneficial to have practice. I didn't complete any volunteering this month, but I have some volunteering events coming up.
Overall, I enjoyed the reproductive module. One of the topics I enjoyed learning about is how the estrogen receptor works and the pathways. I connected this with MCAT studying about the reproductive chapter and the difference between peptide and steroid hormones. I also thought it was interesting how menopause impacts the body in such diverse ways. Also, especially the fact that compared to 1900s and 2020s life expectancy increased about 20 years, but the average age of menopause didn’t increase. I knew menopause had some negative implications but to learn how the lack of estrogen plays a role in many aspects of our body like decreasing bone density. I am excited for the rest of the semester and how to figure out this process of MCAT and school.
