Service Hours: 4 hours
I spend my service hours for the month dedicated to Tulane Brain Institute. I spent 1 hour reviewing and ranking presentations from junior year contestants for The Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair (GNOSEF). I had to rank them using a rubric on how effectively they presented their ideas and how it flowed. I went in person to be a judge for the high school contestants and was given a sheet to rank the most to least successful candidates. This was such a rewarding experience, as I have done research for the majority of my career, so it was a full circle moment to be able to judge the next generation of scientists.
Overall in the program, I feel as if I am more equipped to deal with all the workload since I know what to expect with exams and presentations now. I enjoy doing presentations because it strengthens how I express my ideas. The diabetes module was one of the harder modules for me, but I love neuroscience, so I am really enjoying the current model. Especially learning about the pathophysiology of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
